The speaker at our January 2025 meeting was Dr Baljit Thatti from Kingston University. She introduced the subject by talking about the portrayal of CSI in popular TV programmes (which many of the people present admitted to watching). These programmes do not give a realistic indication of the lengthy, meticulous work required to produce forensic evidence which will stand up in court.
Research has also been carried out into the effect that these programmes can have on decisions made by jurors.  She finished by describing some specific examples such as the identification of the model and colour of a car from fragments of paint left at a crime scene.
