Project Walk Leg 3 - Silchester to Pamber End - about 7.5 miles. (Moderate pace, likely to be some hilly parts)

Event type: Group event
Date: 23rd April 2025
Time: 9:00 am
Group: Walking
Organiser:

Overview:
We need to car share for this leg as there are no public transport options. The walking route starts in Silchester Roman Town - an English Heritage site that was excavated from 1997 to 2015 but is now largely grassed over so only the ruined walls are visible. The town was deserted in about AD500 and there have been no developments since then, so what remains of the walls are the Roman originals.

We will start by walking around the walls and visiting the remains of the amphitheatre (and re-visit the church if anyone wants to get a Pilgrim stamp). We then head south, following the St James Way to Bramley (4.6 miles), where we will (hopefully) have lunch at the Bistro and Farm Shop. After lunch it is a 2.8 mile walk to the pub at Pamber End. We will all have a drink there (as "payment" for allowing us to park our cars there) and then all walkers will pile into the cars to return to the car park at Silchester where we will get into our respective cars for the journey home.

As far as we can tell, the walk should be less hilly than leg 2. There will almost certainly be muddy or damp areas, especially after rain, although there are no obvious bogs shown on the map (unlike leg 2).

NB this walk will not have been recced.  The information about facilities etc has only been researched via the internet and could be inaccurate. In addition, the walk has only been plotted "virtually" so everyone will need to be a bit flexible if things go wrong!

Travel:
Car share leaves Ashford at 9am. Everyone drives initially to the Silchester Roman Town Car Park, Reading RG7 2HP. Walkers will get out here with everything they need for the walk, boot up and get ready for the walk while all the cars head off to the Queens College Arms, Aldermaston Rd, Pamber End, Tadley RG26 5QR. The drivers will gather everything they need for the walk, they will then all get into one car for the drive back to the start of the walk at Silchester, where they will boot up. The waiting time for the walkers at the car park should be around 25 mins.

Facilities:
The only known facilities are as follows: A picnic bench (for your morning coffee if you bring some!) and a single Portaloo in the English Heritage Car Park (bring loo paper and hand gel); toilets at the cafe after 4.6 miles and at the pub at the end of the walk.

Lunch:
The lunch stop is a farm shop and bistro. We are unable to book a table as the place is quite small and can get busy, but we hope to be able to get a seat and buy food there (there are some tables outside as well). If you don't want to risk missing out on lunch, you can bring your own food - hopefully there will be somewhere to eat it (but we are not sure).
